Software for public transport and the people behind it

I’m Uwe M. Schirmer, Head of Software Solutions at rms GmbH, a subsidiary of Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV). My focus is on designing software for public transport that supports people in their day-to-day work and can evolve over the long term.

Questions I think about

What do users need?

How do we understand business requirements and turn them into software that helps people in their everyday work?

How can systems work together reliably?

Interfaces connect different applications. For me, that includes clear agreements on data, responsibilities and how to handle errors.

What does software need after launch?

Going live marks the start of everyday use. Operations, security and ongoing development remain part of the job.

Good solutions need teamwork

It’s also about the people behind the software. Good solutions grow out of an understanding of the business, clear agreements and reliable collaboration. Here I share my personal perspective on development, architecture, operations and security – with accessible examples and room for other people’s experiences.
