About me

I’m interested in how business requirements become software that helps people in their everyday work. For me, that includes well-reasoned technical decisions and effective collaboration between the people who commission, develop and operate software.

How I work

Understanding business requirements, explaining trade-offs and clarifying responsibilities: these concerns connect architecture, development and operations.

Professional background

I hold a Diplom degree in computer science and have spent more than 25 years working on software and the structures that support its development. My career has taken me from development through software architecture and consulting to leading teams and business units, including roles at Zühlke, ERNI, Sopra Steria, adesso and Accenture.

I joined rms GmbH in 2021, initially as a software architect, and have headed the Software Solutions business unit since 2024. In this role, I combine technical and organisational responsibility for software in public transport. One of my current priorities is exploring how AI can effectively support software development.

I also share my experience through writing, translation and professional exchange: as the German translator of Clean Craftsmanship, as co-author of The Professional Scrum Team and Shell Scripting Dojo, and through my involvement in iSAQB and the Rhine-Main software architecture community.

A personal perspective

Writing and learning are part of my life beyond day-to-day project work. Explaining ideas and trying things out often lead to new questions — and that is precisely what makes working with software so interesting to me. Sharing knowledge together is particularly rewarding: I wrote Shell Scripting Dojo with my son, Louis Schirmer.

I find balance through fitness and strength training, as well as shooting sports. I also volunteer as a club board member and range officer, helping to organise and run national competitions.
